Contemporary social psychology, particularly in some dominant approaches, has adopted a mass-oriented and reductionist perspective that regards discrimination as a unified and predominantly negative structure. By overlooking the ontological dimensions of human differences, such approaches have encountered limitations in explaining and addressing inequality. The present study employs qualitative content analysis and an interdisciplinary theoretical confrontation to examine the conceptual network of Qur’anic verses concerning human differences. The findings indicate that, based on this conceptual network, human differences and the process through which they are transformed into social distinctions and discrimination can be formulated as a three-layer explanatory model. The first layer consists of “constitutive and reality-based distinctions,” encompassing differences in abilities, biological characteristics, and gender, which are regarded as necessary for the dynamism and coherence of the created order. The second layer comprises “acquired and merit-based distinctions,” arising from the actual performance and choices of individuals and groups. The third layer consists of “induced and false distortions,” resulting from erroneous beliefs, mechanisms of othering, faulty cognitive schemas, and socially constructed stereotypes. While a substantial part of the social psychological literature examines distinction and discrimination with an emphasis on their psychological and social consequences, the Qur’anic approach distinguishes, prior to evaluating distinctions, between their actual origins and their validity. Accordingly, distinguishing between “reality-based structural distinctions” and “discriminatory distortions” may provide a conceptual basis for reconsidering the orientation of social interventions and critically evaluating some prevailing assumptions concerning.
