Despite the importance of political anthropology, this field has received less attention from researchers in political science. The main question of the present article is: What is the role and position of anthropology as a foundation and criterion in political theorizing, and how do the most important contemporary theories in this field explain it? The main hypothesis is that prevailing theories of political anthropology suffer from significant deficiencies due to reductionism, neglect of the composite nature of humans, and failure to elaborate the detailed implications for key political concepts. This research has been conducted with the aim of analyzing and examining the role of the most important theories of political anthropology, and ultimately explaining the requisites of a sound and effective political anthropology. This study, employing a critical-analytical method and a library-based approach, extracts, examines, and critiques the ideas of key thinkers in the field of political anthropology.
The findings of the research indicate that the reviewed theories (e.g., Barry, Forbes and Smith, Heywood), while emphasizing the central role of anthropology in politics, are insufficient due to their disregard for the composite nature of humans (reason and instinct, individuality and sociality), and insufficient attention to the objective implications of fundamental concepts in political science. The conclusion of the present research shows that political anthropology serves as both the foundation for theorizing and the criterion for criticizing political ideas. Formulating an accurate and effective political anthropology requires simultaneous attention to the individual and social, inherent and acquired, rational and instinctive dimensions of humans, as well as a detailed elaboration of its implications for concepts such as state, legitimacy, participation, and governance within a coherent theoretical framework to explain the relationship between anthropology and political theory.
