The present study aimed to examine the effect of family cultural capital on children’s religious commitment with the mediating role of religious socialization among high school students in Tehran. This research was quantitative in nature and applied in terms of purpose, and it was conducted using a survey method. The theoretical framework of the study is based on Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital, which emphasizes the role of the family in transmitting cultural values and attitudes to the next generation. In addition, drawing on the perspectives of symbolic interactionism and religious socialization theory, adolescents’ religious commitment is explained as a product of family interactions and the process of socialization within the family context.
The statistical population consisted of 384 male and female students who were selected through a multi-stage cluster sampling method. Data were collected using three questionnaires measuring cultural capital, religious socialization, and religious commitment. The validity and reliability of the instruments were confirmed through Cronbach’s alpha, Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and the Fornell–Larcker matrix. Structural equation modeling using SmartPLS software and the Sobel test were employed to test the hypotheses and examine the mediating role.
The findings indicated a positive and significant relationship between family cultural capital, religious socialization, and children’s religious commitment. The correlation matrix showed that family cultural capital had a significant relationship with children’s religious commitment (r = 0.552, p < 0.01) and religious socialization (r = 0.477, p < 0.01). The strongest relationship was observed between religious socialization and children’s religious commitment (r = 0.609, p < 0.01). The results of structural equation modeling also revealed that family cultural capital had a significant effect on religious socialization (β = 0.537, t = 15.19, p < 0.001) and children’s religious commitment (β = 0.400, t = 10.16, p < 0.001). Furthermore, religious socialization showed a positive and significant effect on children’s religious commitment (β = 0.461, t = 11.13, p < 0.001).Overall, the results indicate that family cultural capital plays an important role in increasing adolescents’
